1. EC notice to DMK’s Udhayanithi Stalin for alleged remarks on Swaraj, Jaitley

The Election Commission Tuesday issued a notice to DMK leader Udhayanithi Stalin for his alleged remarks that BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley died as they were “unable to tolerate the pressure and torture” given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The EC has asked him to respond to the notice before 5.00 pm on Wednesday, “failing which the Commission shall take a decision without any further reference to you”.

2. HC to pronounce decision on pleas against wearing of mask while driving alone in private vehicle

The Delhi High Court is scheduled to pronounce on Wednesday its decision on several pleas challenging the imposition of challan for not wearing a mask while driving a private vehicle alone. Justice Prathiba M Singh, who heard the arguments on behalf of the Centre, Delhi government and the petitioners who were challenged for not wearing a mask while driving alone in their respective vehicles, had reserved the verdict on February 17.

3. Night curfew in Chandigarh as COVID cases rise

The Chandigarh administration decided on Tuesday to impose curfew from 10 pm to 5 am in the wake of the soaring coronavirus cases in the city. The night curfew will be implemented from Wednesday, according to a spokesperson.

4. Four Himachal municipal corporations go to polls today

The elections for four Himachal Pradesh municipal corporations are being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister Jairam Thakur ahead of the Assembly polls next year. Dharamshala, Mandi, Solan and Palampur will go to the polls from 8 am to 4 pm on Wednesday.

5. SII to start supplying 1st made-in-India pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to Centre from today

The Serum Institute of India (SII) will start supplying the first indigenously developed pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to the Centre from Wednesday, sources said on Tuesday. The vaccine acts against potentially fatal pneumococcal infections such as pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis.

6. Mukhtar Ansari brought back to Banda today

Gangster-turned BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari was brought from Ropar in Punjab to Banda on Wednesday morning and will be kept in barrack number 15 of the district jail, a police official said. The security in Banda jail, meanwhile, has been beefed up with the deployment of an additional police force and he would be guarded by three security personnel round the clock inside the barrack.

7. Markets eke out slim gains in choppy trade; RBI policy eyed

The Sensex and Nifty ended marginally higher on Tuesday after see-saw trade amid concerns over the economic impact of the second wave of coronavirus infections and localised lockdowns in some states. Participants also remained on the sidelines ahead of RBI’s policy decision on Wednesday, traders said.

8. 10-day drive to strictly enforce COVID-19 protocol in Odisha from today

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Tuesday reviewed the situation arising out of the spike in the number of coronavirus cases in the state, particularly in the western districts adjoining Chhattisgarh and asked the state police to launch a 10-day special drive to strictly enforce the COVID-19 safety protocol, officials said. Police sources said the drive with zero tolerance against violations will begin from Wednesday

The number of positive coronavirus cases India recorded in the last 24 hours stands at 1,20,876, taking the tally in the country to 1,27,94,836, at the time of publishing this newsletter. The death toll from the disease stands at 1,67,576.
