1. Odisha extends lockdown with stricter restrictions till June 1

With Odisha continuing to report around 10,000 new COVID-19 cases daily, the State government on Tuesday extended the ongoing lockdown with stricter restrictions by two more weeks till on June 1. Chief Secretary S C Mohapatra announced this a day before the completion of the tenure of the first phase of lockdown at 5 am on May 19.

2. Elgar case: HC likely to hear accused Swamy’s bail plea

The Bombay High Court is likely to hear the medical bail plea of Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad Maoist links case, on Wednesday. The 84-year-old activist, arrested in October 2020, is currently lodged in the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai and is battling ill health.

3. Cyclone Tauktae: Power supply to be restored in entire Goa

The electricity supply in Goa, snapped due to the cyclonic storm Tauktae, will be restored by Wednesday, the State electricity department said on Tuesday. Most areas in Goa plunged into darkness on Sunday after high-speed winds coupled with rains uprooted transmission cables, poles and trees.

4. Cyclone Tauktae: Light rains bring down mercury in Delhi; squalls likely in NCR region

As Cyclone Tauktae weakens further, its remnants will bring moderate rains to several parts of north India including the Delhi-NCR region, the Indian Meteorological Department said.

5. PM Modi to visit Gujarat, Diu to review situation after cyclone Tauktae

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gujarat and Diu on Wednesday to personally review the situation there and the damage wrought by cyclone Tauktae, government sources said. He will leave Delhi at around 9:30 AM and land at Bhavnagar from where he will proceed for an aerial survey of Una, Diu, Jafarabad and Mahuva, they said. Modi will also hold a review meeting at Ahmedabad.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong announced total lockdownin East Khasi Hills district from Wednesday 8 p.m. till May 31 following the spike in COVID-19 cases.

Daughter of West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim, Shabba Hakim, has appealed to TMC supporters and her father’s followers not to gather in front of the correctional home or their residence on Wednesday when the Calcutta High Court will hear the Narada case again.

8. Russia, China to kick-off their biggest nuclear power project

Russia and China will hold the ground-breaking ceremony of their biggest nuclear energy project on Wednesday under which Moscow would jointly build four high power nuclear power plants in two Chinese cities. Chinese President Xi Jinping will join his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin via video link in Beijing to witness the ground-breaking ceremony of the bilateral nuclear energy cooperation project on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told the media.
