1. Bengal Chief Secretary retired, to act as Chief Advisor to CM: Mamata

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she was appointing West Bengal’s Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay as an Advisor for three years effective from Tuesday, after allowing the bureaucrat who was ordered by the central government to report to Delhi, to retire.

2. BRICS foreign ministers to hold virtual meeting

Boosting cooperation in effectively dealing with the coronavirus pandemic is expected to figure prominently at a virtual meeting of the foreign ministers of India, China and three other member countries of the BRICS grouping on Tuesday. The foreign ministers are also likely to discuss the need for reforming the multilateral system and ways to enhance cooperation in countering terrorism, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday.

3. Bihar lockdown extended till June 8, with eased curbs to facilitate business

This is for the fourth time the Bihar government has extended lockdown from May 5, 2021. The Nitish Kumar government on Monday extended the lockdown till June 8 but eased many restrictions, relieved over the decline in intensity of the COVID-19 second wave.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday extended the relaxations announced in the coronavirus curfew to six more districts from June 1, allowing shops and markets outside the containment zones to open for five days a week.

Japanese auto major Nissan on Monday said the reopening of its alliance manufacturing plant with Renault in Chennai will be done in a phased and gradual manner while assuring full cooperation to the court-ordered inspection of the unit by the State government slated for Tuesday.

The Centre sent a reminder to West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay who “retired” on Monday to report to the Personnel Ministry in Delhi at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, failing which disciplinary action would be initiated against him, officials said.

7. Navjot Sidhu likely to meet 3-member party committee in Delhi

8. Noida starts special vaccination drive for parents with kids aged below 12

A special anti-Covid vaccination campaign will begin from Tuesday in Noida and Greater Noida for inoculating parents or guardians of children aged 12 or below, officials said on Monday. The special campaign begins from two centres – JP International School in Greater Noida and the Primary Health Centre Bisrakh – where covishield would be administered to beneficiaries, the officials said.

The Producers Guild of India, the association of Indian film, television and digital content producers, on Monday announced a vaccination drive for its members and associated production crews beginning from June 1. According to a press release, the guild said the members will be vaccinated over the multi-day drive to be held at Mehboob Studios in suburban Bandra.

India’s average daily test positivity rate (positive cases identified for every 100 tests) continues to decline. It was 9% on May 30 compared to 12.7% recorded a week before. The number of positive coronavirus cases in India recorded in the last 24 hours stands at 1,22,964, taking the tally in the country to 2,81, 69,970 at the time of publishing this newsletter. The death toll from the disease stands at 3,31,871.
