    1. SC to pronounce verdict on pleas challenging Maratha quota

    The Supreme Court will on Wednesday pronounce its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the Bombay High Court verdict which had upheld the grant of reservation to Marathas in admissions and government jobs in the state. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan will pronounce the verdict.

    2. Mamata Banerjee’s swearing-in to be low-key

    The swearing-in of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee as Chief Minister at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday morning will be a low-key programme given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a government official said.

    3. Sri Lankan Parliament postpones debate on China-backed Colombo Port City bill

    The debate on the controversial Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill was scheduled for discussion on Wednesday. All party leaders in the House agreed that the debate should be rescheduled as the Supreme Court's determination on the constitutionality of the bill had not yet reached Parliament, officials said.

    4. Oxygen Express: Delhi to receive 244 tonnes of oxygen

    Delhi will receive 244 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen on Wednesday and with this, the total amount delivered to the city in 24 hours will be nearly 450 tonnes, the railways said.

    5. Bihar imposes lockdown till May 15

    A lockdown was imposed in Bihar till May 15 amid a surge in COVID-19 cases with the state facing a positivity rate of around 10%, officials said on Tuesday. The lockdown will come into effect on Wednesday..

    6. Vaccination for 18-44 age group to begin in Madhya Pradesh

    Vaccination against COVID-19 for people in the 18-44 age group will begin in Madhya Pradesh from Wednesday in a phased manner as per the availability of doses, a senior official said. State IEC Bureau deputy director Archana Mundir said vaccination will be on the basis of pre-registration, and will take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

    7. O2 plants at AIIMS, RML to start supply

    The installation of medical oxygen plants at the AIIMS and the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital has already started and is likely to be completed by Tuesday night, according to the Union health ministry. With the piping connection and testing ensured through a dry run scheduled for Wednesday, the two plants will start functioning latest by Wednesday evening, it said.

    8. Night curfew in Assam from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.

    The Assam government on Tuesday advanced the night curfew to 6 p.m. from the current 8 p.m. with restrictions imposed on the movement of people at public places from Wednesday, to contain the surge of COVID-19 cases. Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah who is also the Chairperson of Assam State Disaster Authority issued the order after reviewing the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the state.

    9. BCCI suspends IPL 2021 after players test positive for COVID-19

    The Indian Premier League’s 2021 edition has been indefinitely suspended, according to IPL chairman Brijesh Patel. “We have suspended the IPL for now. The new window will be worked out later on. A statement will follow soon,” Mr. Patel told The Hindu on May 4.

    10. After IPL postponement, World T20 could be moved to UAE

    This year's T20 World Cup is set to be moved from India to the UAE with the BCCI acknowledging that none of the participating teams would be "comfortable" coming here because "a third wave" of COVID-19 cases is expected at the time of the event.

Night curfew extended to more areas in Tripura With the surge in coronavirus cases in Tripura, the state government decided to extend night curfew to all local and urban bodies and nagar panchayat areas as well as the number of hours under it, officials said. Tripura chief secretary, Manoj Kumar on Monday passed the order which said that the night curfew will be in force indefinitely from Tuesday. 3. Stalin to chair DMK MLAs meeting The DMK announced convening a meeting of the party's newly elected MLAs on May 4 here, where party chief M K Stalin is likely to be elected their Legislature Party Leader. 4. As virus cases surge, Punjab seeks more oxygen tankers from Centre Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh appealed to the Centre for more oxygen tankers, saying the state did not have enough tankers to transport oxygen for seriously ill COVID-19 patients. The CM said the currently has only 15 tankers at its disposal, with two more likely to come in by Tuesday. 5. Opposition MLAs to discuss pandemic situation in Goa MLAs of Opposition parties in Goa are slated to meet on Tuesday to discuss the current pandemic scenario in the coastal state. "Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat has convened a meeting of all Opposition MLAs tomorrow at his chamber in the Assembly complex to discuss the alarming COVID-19 situation in Goa," a release said. 6. Delhi to receive 205 tonnes of oxygen by Tuesday: Railways The railways will deliver its biggest consignment of 205 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) to Delhi by Tuesday morning, the national transporter said. While 120 tonnes of LMO in an 'Oxygen Express' with six tankers will be delivered to Delhi from Durgapur in West Bengal, 85 tonnes in four tankers will be delivered to the national capital from Hapa in Gujarat, it said on Monday. 7.     New Chief Justice of India sworn in Delhi, May 3: Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana was appointed as the 48th Chief Justice of India. He assumed office on 24th April 2021. The Chief Justice of India is the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is the highest-ranking officer in the Indian judicial system. Justice Ramana was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2000. He has been a Supreme Court judge since 2014. India is a democratic country. It has its own Constitution.     2. Counting halls up by 200% due to COVID norms; nearly a lakh personnel to count votes today

    Starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday, the counting of votes for the 822 Assembly seats spread across West BengalTamil NaduAssamKerala and Puducherry will take place at 2,364 counting halls following the COVID-19 protocols, the Election Commission (EC) said on Saturday. No candidates or their agents will be allowed inside the counting halls without a negative coronavirus report, according to the latest result-day guidelines issued by the EC.

    3. Counting of votes in UP panchayat polls to be held today

    Counting of votes for the panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh will be held on Sunday with the Supreme Court on Saturday refusing to stay the process.

    4. Phase 3 of the vaccination drive

    The Health Ministry said 84,599 beneficiaries in the 18-44 age group received their first dose of coronavirus vaccine in the country on Saturday. A total of 16,48,192 vaccine doses were given till 8 p.m. on Saturday, the 106th day of the inoculation drive, the ministry said.

      1. Bengal elections: 35 constituencies to go to polls in final phase

      Over 84 lakh voters in West Bengal will decide the political fate of 283 candidates on Thursday, when 35 Assembly constituencies go to polls in the eighth and final phase, amid a raging second wave of COVID-19.

      2. First consignments of medical supplies from US, Russia expected to reach India by today

      Sources said India sought medical supplies from the US including AstraZeneca vaccines as well as raw materials for production of the vaccines through the Indian embassy and various other channels.

      "Starting Thursday, the city's COVID-19 hospitals will admit patients on the basis of their need, irrespective of whether they arrived on '108' ambulances, private ambulances, private vehicles, or on foot," the AMC said, following a high-level meeting on Wednesday.
