1. Lockdown for 14 days in Karnataka from today

The Karnataka Cabinet on Monday announced a partial lockdown across the State for 14 days starting from 9 p.m. today. Only shops providing essential services would be open from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. for the next two weeks, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa announced soon after a Cabinet meeting.

2. SC to hear Vedanta plea

Vedanta has objected in the Supreme Court to allow Tamil Nadu government run its oxygen plant situated in the State. The court had urged the Tamil Nadu government or expert authorities to take over the plant and start the manufacture of medical oxygen to tide over the life-threatening shortage amid the pandemic across the country. The court is scheduled to hear the case in April 27.

3. Oxygen Express with 70 tonnes of oxygen reaches Delhi

The first Oxygen Express train for Delhi carrying around 70 tonnes of the life-saving gas reached the national capital early Tuesday morning, officials said. This oxygen will now be disbursed by the Delhi government to various hospitals, they said.

4. Modi speaks to Biden about COVID-19; U.S. orders for vaccine filters diverted to India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Joe Biden had a telephone conversation on Monday with assurances exchanged on smoothening out issues related to supply chains for vaccines for COVID-19 and the latter affirming that the U.S. would be supporting India’s efforts to come to grips with the massive second wave of the pandemic. Earlier in the day, the Biden administration has diverted its pending orders of vaccine filters to India’s vaccine manufacturers, according to White House’s COVID-19 Supply Manager Tim Manning.

5. WHO sending help to India as virus surges

The head of the World Health Organisation called the recent surge in coronavirus in India “beyond heartbreaking” and said the UN agency has dispatched critical supplies to the subcontinent, including thousands of portable oxygen machines.

6. Myanmar insurgent group says it has captured military base near Thai border

A prominent ethnic rebel group attacked and captured a military base in eastern Myanmar near the Thai border early Tuesday morning, an official from the group said. “Our troops captured the Burmese military camp,” Karen National Union’s head of foreign affairs Padoh Saw Taw Nee told AFP, adding that the fighting took place around 5 am.

7. U.S. Supreme Court to hear appeal on expanding gun rights

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal to expand gun rights in the United States in a New York case over the right to carry a firearm in public for self-defense. It’s the court’s first foray into gun rights since Justice Amy Coney Barrett came on board in October, making a 6-3 conservative majority.
