1. SC to pronounce verdict on pleas challenging Maratha quota

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday pronounce its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the Bombay High Court verdict which had upheld the grant of reservation to Marathas in admissions and government jobs in the state. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan will pronounce the verdict.

2. Mamata Banerjee’s swearing-in to be low-key

The swearing-in of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee as Chief Minister at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday morning will be a low-key programme given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a government official said.

3. Sri Lankan Parliament postpones debate on China-backed Colombo Port City bill

The debate on the controversial Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill was scheduled for discussion on Wednesday. All party leaders in the House agreed that the debate should be rescheduled as the Supreme Court’s determination on the constitutionality of the bill had not yet reached Parliament, officials said.

4. Oxygen Express: Delhi to receive 244 tonnes of oxygen

Delhi will receive 244 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen on Wednesday and with this, the total amount delivered to the city in 24 hours will be nearly 450 tonnes, the railways said.

5. Bihar imposes lockdown till May 15

A lockdown was imposed in Bihar till May 15 amid a surge in COVID-19 cases with the state facing a positivity rate of around 10%, officials said on Tuesday. The lockdown will come into effect on Wednesday..

6. Vaccination for 18-44 age group to begin in Madhya Pradesh

Vaccination against COVID-19 for people in the 18-44 age group will begin in Madhya Pradesh from Wednesday in a phased manner as per the availability of doses, a senior official said. State IEC Bureau deputy director Archana Mundir said vaccination will be on the basis of pre-registration, and will take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

7. O2 plants at AIIMS, RML to start supply

The installation of medical oxygen plants at the AIIMS and the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital has already started and is likely to be completed by Tuesday night, according to the Union health ministry. With the piping connection and testing ensured through a dry run scheduled for Wednesday, the two plants will start functioning latest by Wednesday evening, it said.

8. Night curfew in Assam from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The Assam government on Tuesday advanced the night curfew to 6 p.m. from the current 8 p.m. with restrictions imposed on the movement of people at public places from Wednesday, to contain the surge of COVID-19 cases. Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah who is also the Chairperson of Assam State Disaster Authority issued the order after reviewing the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the state.

9. BCCI suspends IPL 2021 after players test positive for COVID-19

The Indian Premier League’s 2021 edition has been indefinitely suspended, according to IPL chairman Brijesh Patel. “We have suspended the IPL for now. The new window will be worked out later on. A statement will follow soon,” Mr. Patel told The Hindu on May 4.

10. After IPL postponement, World T20 could be moved to UAE

This year’s T20 World Cup is set to be moved from India to the UAE with the BCCI acknowledging that none of the participating teams would be “comfortable” coming here because “a third wave” of COVID-19 cases is expected at the time of the event.

The number of positive coronavirus cases in India recorded in the last 24 hours stands at 3,76,491, taking the tally in the country to 2,06,35,834 at the time of publishing this newsletter. The death toll from the disease stands at 2,25,994.
