1. Cyclone Tauktae | Two killed in Kerala as storm intensifies

Cyclonic storm Tauktae (pronounced Tau’te) in the Arabian Sea is expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm by May 16, with wind speeds expected to touch 160 kilometres per hour by May 17. Rain is expected to intensify in coastal Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat over the next 48 hours, causing damage to plantations, thatched houses and roads.

2. Navy deploys rescue teams in Kerala, IAF puts assets on standby

The Navy on Saturday deployed relief teams from the Southern Naval Command, which undertook rescue operations in the Cyclone Tauktae affected area of Chellanam coast in Kerala. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has kept 16 transport aircraft and 18 helicopters on operational readiness in peninsular India in preparation for Cyclone Tauktae which is expected to cause very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall along the western coast in the next few days.

3. West Bengal announces complete lockdown from Sunday

On Saturday, the West Bengal government announced a complete lockdownfrom Sunday till May 30 to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the State. “We are taking some strict measures to contain the pandemic, starting Sunday 6 am till 6 pm of May 30,” Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said.

4. Drones, Geo Fencing to keep an eye on people in 4 ‘triple lockdown’ districts in Kerala

Drones and Geo-Fencing technology will be used and strict restrictions would be clamped in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram districts, reporting the highest number of COVID-19 cases, where triple lockdown will come into force from midnight on Sunday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

5. Special court remands rebel YSRC MP to 14 days in judicial custody

On the other hand, hearing a Habeas Corpus petition, the Andhra Pradesh High Court constituted a medical board to examine K. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju’s injuries and submit a report by Sunday.

6. Chhatrasal stadium brawl: Non-bailable warrants issued against Sushil Kumar, 6 others

A Delhi Court on Saturday issued non-bailable warrants against two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and six others in connection with the Chhatrasal Stadium brawl that led to the death of a wrestler, police said. This comes days after a lookout notice was issued against Kumar in the same case

7. Mortal remains of Soumya Santhosh arrives in Kochi

The mortal remains of Soumya Santhosh, 30, who died in a rocket attack in the Israeli city of Ashkelon on Tuesday, was brought here to the Cochin international airport by an Air India flight. Her funeral will be held at the cemetery of Nithya Sahaya Matha Church, Keerithodu on Sunday afternoon.

8. Israel strikes Gaza home of Hamas leader, destroys AP office

Israel slammed the Gaza Strip with airstrikes, in a dramatic escalation that included bombing the home of a senior Hamas leader, killing a family of 10 in a refugee camp — most of them children — and pulverizing a high-rise that housed The Associated Press and other media.

9. Coronavirus | Latest numbers and developments

India recorded 3,07,423 new COVID-19 cases until 11.05 p.m. IST on May 15. As many as 4,010 more deaths were also registered. The country has so far reported a total of 2,46,79,908 cases and 2,70,254 deaths.
